Took Liam in for a glasses check last week, and he jumped from -1.5 to -3.5 in both eyes in just six months! So he has new glasses, and we may be looking at RGP contacts for him if this high rate of change keeps up, since the hard lenses can help slow that down. I didn't think I'd be ready to put a child this young into RGPs, but I may be changing my mind.

Tamara and Jarod visited the low vision specialist today for new glasses. Tamara still checks out at 20/30 left and 20/70 right with full correction, and her prescription hasn't really changed. Since she's been having trouble with bright lights causing glare and colors on her retina (side effect of the new tension on her retina), we added anti-glare coating to her glasses. She also hasn't been able to read through her glasses, so we added bifocals so she doesn't have to look over the top or take them off. Talk about sticker shock; her glasses were $740 before insurance!!!

Jarod officially graduated from "impaired" to "blind" even by adult standard today. (In children, anything worse than 20/80 in the better eye is considered legally blind, but for adults that doesn't hit until 20/200.) He measured 20/200 right and "count fingers" in the left. He's not really using his left eye much at all anymore because it is so bad. No prescription change for him, but we upgraded him from the Miraflex toddler frames with the sport strap to some Solo-Bambini preschool frames with cable temples.

I also got that doc to glance at Kender and confirm something I noticed over the weekend. Kender's retinal folds are constantly visible as bright white arc reflections inside his pupils. Last Saturday, I noticed that the reflection in his right eye had become reddish-brown, and there appeared to be a reddish pool at the bottom which was gone the next day. I called Dr. Trese's office Monday morning, and I kind of got blown off, although they said to bring him on in with Tamara next Tuesday. It was good to get confirmation from a "professional" (urgh) that I wasn't seeing things, and to discuss the possible causes (it might NOT be bleeding).

Another day, another thousand dollars to the vision industry. :)
