Tamara has new vision loss

Tamara reported seeing flashing lights yesterday morning during school. She also said she felt like she was cross-eyed when she tried to read, after the flashes. I checked her vision and discovered that she couldn't read a magazine at a normal distance with her right eye, although she could with her left. We called Dr. Trese's office and set up an emergency appointment for just 2 hours away, and left immediately.

When she first checked in, they put her on a new machine that both checks the physical refraction of the eye, and then uses eye charts to check acuity with that refraction correction in place. Fairly nifty little machine. Tamara did just fine in her left eye, but in her right eye could not read the 20/100 line with the correction.

Dr. Trese took a look with the slit lamp, and then again with the magnifying lens. He said he did not see any exudates in the vitreous, and he did not see any noticeable tears or detachments in the retina. He said he wanted her to come in next Monday for an EUA and angiogram to get a better look and try to diagnose the cause of the acuity loss. Before we left, though, he had her get an OCT scan with one of his partners. The scan showed some slight elevation of the retinal surface around the macula, which could indicate a sub-surface leakage causing folding and detachment of the retina. So Tamara is currently scheduled for EUA on Monday (along with Jarod and Kender, who are getting their regular 3-month checks) with an angiogram. The angiogram will allow Dr. Trese to see what the blood vessels are doing and to find any new leaks. He'll be able to get a better picture of what's going on with her retina, and then will be able to determine any possible fixes.

On the way home, while talking with Tamara some more, I discovered that she also has a bend in her vision in the right eye. In other words, if she looks at something straight, like a telephone pole, it appears to lean over at the top. This is definitely indicative of a retinal fold forming. This morning, I checked her for a focal point, and she does claim to have one, although it is closer than it should be. That's promising for being able to get her new glasses, but glasses won't fix the image distortion from the retinal fold. We'll have to wait until Monday to get more information.
