Tough Breaks
The one triplet who had so far avoided any stitches now has the dubious distinction of being the first person in the family to break a bone. Tamara managed to fall off her own two feet, on a flat, carpeted floor, and break her ring finger last Friday. She broke the base of her ring finger on her left hand. It was a clean break, and the doctor just put a splint on the one finger and sent her home. We decided to support it a little more by taping that finger to the two fingers next to it, both to protect it and to make sure it stays straight. She says it hurts, but she refuses to be still with it, still trying to roughhouse with everybody. We're still wondering if we might have to cast her for her own good, but we'll wait another day or two and see.
I did find a wonderful website here that offered some reassuring information on these types of fractures. Tamara's appears to be a condylar fracture, and the page makes special note that children her age recover very well even if the healed alignment isn't perfect. I was already planning to start piano lessons soon; we'll be getting those going as soon as she's out of her splint, so she can regain the strength in her hand quickly.
